Star Wars: Resistance Episode 1 “The Recruit”

This is the first episode in the new Star Wars animated series.  I know it’s been out for a few weeks, but I was on vacation and didn’t have time to check it out.  I did read some good and bad things about it, and thought I’d put my thoughts on it here.

It’s different.  Like the Clone Wars series and Rebels, the animation style has changed again.  I wasn’t sure how I felt about it at first, but as the episode went on I grew more comfortable with it.  I like how the ships are rendered, and really enjoyed the visual of Starkiller Base at the end.  That looked great.  I felt similar with Rebels when it began.  I’m sure that as I get used to it I’ll grow to enjoy it more.  It’s a different series, with different characters in a different time period.  It needs its own feel.

As for the story, I found it started slow.  Even though it began with a dogfight, I didn’t fully engage until after Poe Dameron had left the scene.  No knock on that character, but I felt that the main character of the show, Kaz, wasn’t able to really step into the light and start to be himself until Dameron’s shadow was gone.

Overall I’d say this series had a decent first episode.  There was nothing jarring or openly distasteful about it, it was just different from what I’m used to in a Star Wars animated show.  That’s not a bad thing and will allow it to grow into its own.  That ending also will ensure I stick around for at least a few more episodes!

  1. This is one is not yet available here in my country, but I have seen a few clips here and there, and reading this it sounds like so far it’s an okay show. Most of the animations shows in the Star Wars universe have started off a bit slow, so hopefully it will gain some momentum later on. The premise is interesting enough for sure 😊
