Free Comic Book Day 2019

Today was any comic book fans’ Christmas, the day that shops are guaranteed to have some great deals and hand out some free books.  The books vary from year to year, but there’s always something for everyone.

I’ve been taking my kids the past few years, and this year was no exception.  I love their enthusiasm at getting their hands on books of their very own.  They absolutely love being able to choose their own.  My local shop(only got to one of them this year), Kapow, had a great atmosphere today.  They had pins and suckers, colouring books put together by local artists, and a huge selection.  We got there shortly after opening and they were packed!

They allow every customer to pick up 5 free books, which makes sense to me.  It allows late-risers to participate as well and hopefully get a crack at some of the more popular books.  As well, this year Kapow had an exclusive Valiant title: Bloodshot.  This one didn’t count towards your 5.  Needless to say I grabbed it.  Now, on to my picks!

Bloodshot(Valiant) – This one was pretty good, lots of action, good art, and a Prelude Story for the new Valiant title Fallen World.  The prelude story was actually my favourite part, and I think I’d like to check out Fallen World as a result.

Spider-Man(Marvel) – This one has two stories, the first focusing on Eddie Brock in jail and infected with the Carnage symbiote, and the second a fun story featuring a team up between Peter Parker and Miles Morales.  Probably my favourite complete book for the day.

Robotech(Titan) – This one seems to be a summary of the history of Robotech told in a slightly jumpy narrative.  The art was solid and overall I enjoyed it.

The Avengers(Marvel) – Pretty decent tale, showcasing several Avengers teams in the first tale, and a Savage Avengers tale in the second.  Enjoyable and a good entry for Free Comic Book Day.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(IDW) – Another sort of history narrative, that also opens with an impressive chase scene that looks to set up the next story line.  The narrative was really well done and makes this a great book for someone looking to get into TMNT for the first time.

Star Wars Adventures(IDW) – This is the Han and Chewie story from the Tales from Vader’s Castle series.  What can I say?  It’s a fun little Star Wars story.  IDW does a great job with the lighter-hearted Star Wars stuff and this book is no exception.

There you have it!  If you took part in FCBD I hope you had fun and a good haul!  I also hope you grabbed some other stuff to support your local shop.  Keep in mind, these books are free to us, but your shop still has to buy them.
